The Colt Starting Academy at Smith Horsemanship is an advanced, 7-day immersive training program designed for those serious about honing their horsemanship skills. Hosted at the ranch, students will stay on-site, gaining hands-on experience with wild and untrained horses, and learning essential techniques to start colts with confidence.

Course Overview:On the first day, students will settle into their accommodations before an introduction to the academy, followed by the first session with the horses. Throughout the week, each student will work directly with horses, learning how to handle and train them. Although the course is short, it’s packed with valuable knowledge, offering a solid foundation for those seeking further experience in horsemanship.

Students will learn:

• Catching and halter-breaking wild horses
• Gaining ground control and understanding horse body mechanics
• Saddling and desensitizing spooky or untrained horses
• Providing the first rides while minimizing risk for both horse and handler

The program covers over 30 specific training exercises, ensuring students leave with the essential skills needed for colt starting. For those looking for even more hands-on experience, we recommend joining our longer academy programs.
