Code of Conduct

Smith Horsemanship Academy is built to give local South Africans the chance to receive top class natural
horsemanship training while also having an experience of a lifetime.

A code of conduct is a written statement of rules and principles concerning behaviour and discipline. This
code of conduct outlines the kind of behaviour that this Academy and all relevant parties expect from each
student, as well as the standards that we would like to maintain to cultivate this climate of respect.

Please note that this Code of Conduct is separated into two sections, these will be referred to as Section 1
and 2 respectively. Section 1 will handle what students are and are not permitted to do and Section 2
provides the actions to be taken should gross misconduct occur in respect of the rules set out in Section 1.

Misconduct refers to any breach of this Code of Conduct and includes any action by a student that may
disturb the learning of another student, or any behaviour that disrupts the environment.


SECTION 1 - REQUIRED BEHAVIOUR
1. SHOWING RESPECT FOR EACH OTHER
We would like the environment to be one of good manners, and respect. All personnel and students
are expected to always treat each other with respect, and this includes, but is not limited to the
following:
· Foul language will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
· Bullying in any form will not be permitted (verbal, physical, cyber, etc.)
· Disobeying instructions from the instructors will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
· Violent behaviour is not permitted.
· Using cellphones during sessions is not permitted.
· Students are expected to always greet and treat each other and all personnel with respect.

2. RESPECT FOR SAFETY & THE ENVIRONMENT
All students are to respect the safety of others. No behaviour that threatens safety or life will be
permitted. No student is permitted to bring any weapon of any form onto the premises.
Furthermore, drugs or illegal substances are strictly prohibited.
Please respect the facilities; your work environment should be left tidy at the end of each day; do
not cause damage to any property; keep your room, shower, the bathrooms, kitchen and all other
areas clean.

3. VISITORS
No visitors are allowed on the Lavender Stables premises.

4. BOARDING RULES
4.1 All students are to remain on the Lavender Stables premises and not wander off onto other
people’s premises.
4.2 Students can enjoy each other’s company in the public areas designated for relaxation.
4.3 No male is to be in a lady’s room.
4.4 No lady is to be in a male’s room.
4.5 No immoral behavior or sexual conduct is allowed on the premises.

5. DRESS CODE
5.1 Students always need to be dressed suitably.
5.2 A lightweight long sleeve shirt and straw hat to keep yourself cool and burn free are
recommended.
5.3 No shorts are allowed when riding.
5.4 Sunscreen and boots are highly recommended.
5.5 No open shoes.
5.6 Rain jackets and gum boots are also good to have when things get wet.
5.7 The student's outfit, nails and shoes must be clean and tidy at the start of every day.
5.8 Offensive or inappropriate designs and emblems will not be allowed.
5.9 Skimpy and revealing clothes, oversized pants and visible underwear are not acceptable
clothing.
5.10 Long hair must be tied up when in the lecture room, working with a horse, horseback riding
or when doing any practical work.
5.11 Mustaches must be neat and short.
5.12 Beards must be neat and trimmed.
Suitable dress includes any reasonable clothing, but please note the 3
golden rules:
· Shorts/skirts may not be too short (no shorter than mid-thigh).
· Blouses/shirts/t-shirts should not be too low (not lower than one hand betraininglow the collar
bone; index finger to thumb).
· No crop tops.

6. KITCHEN RULES
6.1 All meals are to be provided and prepared by each student.
6.2 Students must wash their own dishes and clean-up after themselves.
7. SMOKING/VAPING, ALCOHOL AND DRUGS
7.1 No alcohol is permitted on the premises at all.
7.2 No student is permitted on the premises under the influence of alcohol or any substance.
7.3 No smoking/vaping in public, nor in communal areas nor in any building.
7.4 Smoking/vaping is only allowed in the dedicated areas as indicated.
7.5 The use/distribution/propagation/equipment of drugs or any illegal substance is not permitted.

8. USE OF MOBILE PHONES & ELECTRONIC DEVICES
The use of mobile phones is to be used in such a way to maintain respect for the instructors and the
other students.
If a cellphone proves to be a distraction for those in training, the cellphone must be put away.
Instructors may instruct students to put their phones away should the device prove to be a
distraction to the student, to other students or to the instructor.
Students take full responsibility for their device and the instructors are fully indemnified against loss
or theft thereof.

9. INTERNET ACCESS
The Lavender Stables Internet Access via Wi-Fi is not available for general browsing or
streaming.
Students will be required to provide their own data for general browsing for recreational purposes.
Illegal and explicit (pornographic) or violent content is not permitted, even on personal devices,
while on the premises.


SECTION 2 - RESULTING ACTIONS
1. SHOWING RESPECT FOR EACH OTHER
Should students disregard the rules stipulated in Section 1 the following process will be instituted:
· A warning will be issued to the student and the parent/guardian will be notified.
· Should the improper behaviour continue, a second warning will be issued, followed by a
discussion with the student and parent/guardian.
· If the behavior continues, a two-day suspension will be enforced.
· If the behavior does not seem to be changeable, the student will be asked to leave the Academy
and premises altogether.

2. RESPECT FOR SAFETY & ENVIRONMENT
Should students ignore the rules in Section 1 and:
· bring a weapon
· threaten any person
· physically assault any person
· be found using/distributing drugs or any illegal substance
The student will be subject to immediate suspension with a written or verbal warning, followed
by a meeting with the student, parent/guardian and an instructor. The matter will come under advice
to decide on appropriate action. Depending on the severity of the situation, the incident may be
reported to the SAPS.

3. VISITORS
No visitors are allowed on the Lavender Stables premises. The student’s accommodation at
Lavender Stables will be in jeopardy if visitors are found on the premises.

4. BOARDING RULES
If non-adherence is found, the student’s accommodation at Lavender Stables will be in jeopardy.

5. DRESS CODE
If a student is not suitably dressed, the issue will be discussed with the student. The student may be
asked to leave the Academy to get appropriately clothed.

6. KITCHEN RULES
If non-adherence is found, the student’s accommodation at Lavender Stables will be in jeopardy.

7. SMOKING/VAPING, ALCOHOL AND DRUGS
If non-adherence is found, the student’s accommodation at Lavender Stables will be in jeopardy and
continuation of the Academy may not be allowed.

8. USE OF MOBILE PHONES & ELECTRONIC DEVICES
Should the use of a cellphone prove to be distracting and problematic, the student will be asked to
not bring their phone again.

9. INTERNET ACCESS
Should students with Lavender Stables’ internet access misuse the internet, a warning will be
issued to the student.

Internet offenses such as downloading/viewing of illegal, explicit (pornographic) or violent content
will be handled as a serious offense. The parent/guardian will be notified of the incident and the
student may not be able to continue with the Academy.

If it is found that any student has illegal or pornographic content on their personal devices, the
student/parent/guardian will be notified that the content is removed before the student returns with
that device.


STUDENT AND PARENT/GUARDIAN AGREEMENT
I agree to support Smith Horsemanship and accept the regulations set out in this page. By using this website, I subscribe to the dictates of Smith Horsemanship’s Code of Conduct and other policies adopted by Smith Horsemanship as amended from time to time and undertake to uphold them.

I, the undersigned parent/guardian/student hereby accept and agree to all the terms and
conditions as stated in this Code of Conduct.
